Exhibition “Year of The Fire Horse”

The exhibition with sculptures by Lena Palmgren aims to capture and enhance the feeling, movement, and state of mind of the horse. Fascinated by animal behavior and movement patterns, the artist works directly from memory, creating an initial sketch in wire and then builds it up with papier maché.

Papier maché allows for great subtlety and playfulness, and the material has been used in art and craft for centuries. In addition to observing living horses in pastures and riding arenas, the artist finds inspiration in museum visits and historical sculpture. This may explain the illusion of timeless bronze that appears in some of the papier-maché works.

Alongside papier maché, selected sculptures are also cast in bronze, further emphasizing the balance between lightness, grace, and permanence.

Artist Lena Palmgren

Lena (b 1964) was born and raised in Kalmar, where her interest in horses began at the age of six when she started riding. Since then, horses have been a constant presence in her life, and the sense of the horse’s movement is deeply embedded in her body. She studied at Konstfack in the mid-1980s, where her horse sculptures first took shape. During this period, she worked with wire and plaster, and a group of horse sculptures was exhibited at the group exhibition Sydosten in Kalmar in 1995. Since then, she has continued to exhibit her work in numerous contexts.
